Lecture: Hiking History of the White Mountains by Mike Dickerman 8:00 – 9:00 p.m.
Margret and H.A. Rey Center, 2nd Floor, Town Square, Waterville Valley, NH 02315
Join us for the third lecture in our "Tales & Trails from the Wilderness" lecture series, sponsored by Wayne and Barbara Thornbrough. Since the time of pioneer settlers Abel and Ethan Allen Crawford, New Hampshire’s White Mountains have been attracting explorers and adventurers to their stunning peaks and lush, vibrant valleys. In the nearly two centuries since the Crawfords constructed their first crude footpath onto the heights of Mount Washington and the Presidential Range, the White Mountain trail system has evolved into an intricate network featuring more than 1400 miles of marked paths. Longtime northern New Hampshire hiking columnist and guidebook author Mike Dickerman traces the fascinating story of this evolution with this new collection of profiles and reflections on the early trails and trailblazers of the region. Retrace the paths of early mountain guides such as Charles Lowe and Allen “Old Man” Thompson. Follow in the tracks of the first and last horseback ascents of the historic Crawford Path. Learn about the early pathmakers who made possible New England’s most popular and extensive mountain trail system. Explore the once trackless regions of the White Mountains with those who went there first. Books will be available to purchase after the slideshow presentation, which Mike Dickerman will be happy to sign for you.
Fee: FREE for Rey Center members and $5 per person for not-yet members.
